2011-06-22 Shaping Project Culture

Project Managers shape their project culture to fit its unique task and environment. But why and how? What is the impact of various contextual factors on the project's culture, and in particular on the impact of the national culture. This PMI Netherlands Chapter meeting helps you to get answers to these questions. This event about Shaping Project Culture is facilitated by MSD in Oss and will be held on

June 22nd, 2011 at the auditorium of MSD in Oss.

18:15     Shaping Project Culture by Professor Dr Alexander Laufer

In his talk professor Laufer will share the results of a major study he conducted in the following US based organizations: AeroVironment Design Development Center, California Institute of Technology, John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Proctor & Gamble, Raytheon, Turner Construction, and the U.S. Air Force. The study is based on elaborate case studies providing rich input from all major stakeholders.  In his talk he will discuss why and how project managers shape their project culture to fit its unique task and environment.

Dr. Laufer is a chaired professor of civil engineering at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, where he also served as the dean of the faculty. Currently he is also a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has served as the editor-in-chief of the NASA Academy of Program and Project Leadership Magazine, ASK, Academy Sharing Knowledge, as well as a member of the advisory board of the NASA Academy of Program and Project Leadership.  He has also served as the director of the Center for Project Leadership at Columbia University. He is a member of the editorial review board of the Project Management Journal.

During the last 20 years, Dr. Laufer has conducted research and taught at three U.S. universities. In his research, he has attempted to develop a “theory of practice” by uncovering, formulating, and articulating the “tacit” knowledge of more than 150 competent project managers from more than 20 advanced organizations. Throughout the years, he has tested the results of his research in real-life settings, most intensively at Procter & Gamble and at NASA.  He has led seminars for executives and project managers in a wide variety of organizations, including AT&T, Bechtel, DuPont, Exxon, General Motors, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Mobile, Motorola, NASA, Parson Brinckerhoff, Proctor & Gamble, Skanska, Stone and Webster, Turner Construction, Texaco, the US Department of Commerce, and the US Department of Defense.

Dr. Laufer is the author of Breaking the Code of Project Management, Macmillan, 2009; co-author of Shared Voyage: Learning and Unlearning from Remarkable Projects, NASA History Office, 2005; co-author of Project Management Success Stories: Lessons of Project Leaders, Wiley, 2000; author of Simultaneous Management: Managing Projects in a Dynamic Environment, AMACOM, the American Management Association, 1997; and co-author of In Quest of Project Excellence through Stories, Procter & Gamble, 1994.
