18:15 Opening & Welcome, by
18:20 Introduction & Purpose, by Bert van der Hooft MCM
A look at two competing project management approaches: Earned Value and Critical Chain. Properly administered, earned value can forecast a project's performance by measuring the schedule/cost indices. Critical Chain focuses on assuring the actual achievement of project goals, using a limited set of metrics. Which is the right approach to control project and portfolio performance?
Bert van der Hooft is representing the Logica Management of Change community for Project-, Programme and Portfolio Management. He is the acting host for this evening.
18:30 Knowing is Measuring with Earned Value Management, by Rob Agelink MCM
Earned Value Management (EVM) in its various forms is a commonly used method of performance measurement. It integrates project scope, cost, and schedule measures to help the project management team assess and measure project performance and progress. Recent developments and a comparison of different project duration forecasting methods using earned value metrics provide new insights around the original EVM theory position on measuring project performance.
Rob Agelink is a part-time lecturer at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences within the Master of Project Management Course. Being Programme Director at Logica, he worked in several executive positions in various market sectors on projects, programmes and business development.
19:15 Gaining Time with Critical Chain Project Management, by Freek de Ruiter
Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) is the elaboration of the TOC (Theory Of Constraints) body of thought by Eli Goldratt on project management. In a single-project situation, the implementation of CCPM promises an average lead time reduction of 25%. In a multi-project, portfolio arena, CCPM promises a due date performance of 80% of the projects in a portfolio. Obviously, this also means a very positive effect on the time spent on the project and to keep the project within its budget.
Freek de Ruiter is a member of the NL TOC Network and has become an enthusiast expert on Critical Chain Project Management. Being Principal Consultant Business & Project Management at Logica, he specializes on the domains planning, scheduling and tracking.
20:00 Break
20:10 Logica World Café Discussion: Earned Value versus Critical Chain
Using Logica’s World Café concept, the application of EVM and CCPM to control project and portfolio performance will be assessed. Which are the similarities, overlaps and/or controversies of both project management approaches? Is either one better geared to specific projects or portfolios than the other?
Logica’s World Café large-scale intervention technique is a creative process to facilitate group dialogue, and to effectively collect and share knowledge and information amongst participants with different backgrounds, interests and objectives.
20:55 Wrap-up, Networking and Drinks
21:30 Closure
Hope to see you all,
